Golf Day 2014

graa golf-day-2014The GRAA Golf Benefit Day in Gauteng kicked off this year on the 30th of October, bringing rangers, friends and families out to support the GRAA and ranger training across Africa. 56 golfers braved the summer heat at the beautiful Irene Country Club with many more coming to cheer them on in encouragement. For the 4th year in a row, Toyota South Africa proudly sponsored the event as well as the first hole of the course. Motorola (via Danimex SA) and Castle Lager very kindly arranged watering points and a mobile refreshments bar for the players, which helped prevent any dehydration in the hot African sun!

Following the golf was a fundraising auction dinner and prize giving for those who played well on the day. Special mention should go to the female golfers who attended and were rewarded with copies of the new "Rangers for Rhinos" calendar. We hope the ladies enjoy seeing our brave rangers who got involved "off duty and behind the scenes" in some rather compromising positions! The day was concluded with an auction kindly supported and hosted by the Michael James Organisation. Lending their expert skills, a series of experiences and holiday packages were sold to the highest bidders. This year's accommodation auction items were truly outstanding and included:

• An iMfolozi Wilderness Trail
• 2 nights at Tswalu Kalahari Lodge
• 2 nights at Kwena Lodge, Gondwana Private Game Reserve
• 3 nights at Thuwale Camp, Majete Wildlife Reserve, Malawi
• 2 nights at Inyati Game Lodge, Sabi Sands
• A 3 night Rhino Monitoring Experience
• 2 nights at Elephant Plains Game Lodge, Sabi Sands
• 2 nights at Ngala Tented Safari Lodge, Timbavati
• 2 nights for 6 people including an Elephant Collaring Experience at Dinokeng Game Reserve

Special mention must be made of the excellent wines that were donated once again from Jordan Winery. They have been great supporters of this event and we value their contribution of their award wining wines.

This occasion marked the best overall auction for the GRAA Golf Day to date, with a total of R154, 325 raised. These funds will be specifically allocated to the training of rangers through the GRAA's Bursary Fund and will see men and women from across Africa enrolled in courses such as Protected Area Special Operations Planning and Advanced Field Ranger Training. Furthermore, the reserves who donated prizes for the auction, will in return have the opportunity to have selected members of their staff receive training through the GRAA. Needless to say, it was a fun day in support of a great cause uniting behind Africa's rangers who are the protectors of our natural heritage and wildlife.

Special thanks should go to Marius Senekal, Senior Manager: Corporate Sales for Toyota South Africa for his continued support and assistance to making this day happen, to Janyce Currin and Currin't Events for organising the day, the Irene Country Club & staff for hosting us and to all those tourism operators who donated auction items and prizes. We thank you all for your generous contributions. Finally thank you to all the golfers, supporters and GRAA members who took the time to join us. We hope you had a great time and are looking forward to seeing you all next year!
