Field Ranger Mentoring

This mentorship initiative was launched in 2015 at Somkhanda Game Reserve, in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, with 18 rangers being mentored. It aims to build on critical skills and improve rangers' effectiveness in the field by:

X Assessing the needs of the field ranger team in terms of skills and equipment

X Building on theoretical skills that rangers have learnt during training by passing on practical experience and in-field techniques

X Addressing the mounting gap developing between protected area management and their field ranger teams

X Ensuring the basic skills needed to ensure the integrity of protected areas are in place and that field ranger teams are operating at optimal levels to combat the ever increasing poaching pressures.

The GRAA is working with its project partners, Wildlands Conservation Trust, to continue supporting Somkhanda's rangers.
